Blog Archive MBA News Stanford GSB Experiences the Burden of Alumni Concentration

Blog Archive MBA News Stanford GSB Experiences the Burden of Alumni Concentration The Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) is generally known for its edge in the technology arena, given its location. Indeed, many Stanford MBAs choose to stay in the San Francisco Bay Area after graduation, in part to take advantage of the school’s vast alumni network there. The Wall Street Journal reported recently  that more than 50% of the MBA program’s recent graduates have remained in the sunny stateâ€"and that doing so may be putting GSB alumni at a disadvantage. Madhav Rajan, the senior associate dean for academic affairs at the Stanford GSB, commented to the WSJ, “Once [students] get here, they become pretty enamored of living here.” He explained that the concentration of graduates within the region means that fewer connections are available for the school’s alumni interested in starting or joining companies in other areas. In a possibly related decision, the school is offering up to 13 fellowships this yearâ€"each worth more than $140Kâ€"to international students who promise to return to their respective countries after earning their degree. Tracy McCabe, the executive director for alumni relations at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, noted that having a saturation of alumni in one specific area can make a school too “dependent on the success and growth of business of that particular geography.” Yet the lure of the Bay Area tech world might prove too difficult for some to resist. Referring to the value of the exchanges he has had with local business leaders and fellow entrepreneurs, second-year GSB student David Adams told the WSJ, “There’s no place in the world where there’s such density.” Adams is the CEO and co-founder of a short-term apartment rental company. Gayatri Datar, who graduated from the Stanford GSB in 2014, has a very different take on the issue, however, and relocated to Kigali, Rwanda, to operate the nonproft group she cofounded. “I’m so much more excited about the stuff that’s going on the other side of the world,” she said. The Government Entity That I Interacted With Was The Lamar

The government entity that I interacted with was the Lamar School District Re-2 School Board in Lamar, Colorado. I attended a meeting on February 13, 2017 at Central Office, 210 West Pearl Street. The meeting started at 6:30 PM. I was not able to take part in the meeting because I am not a member of the board, but I was able to take note on what was being discussed and give a report about it to my student body government at my high school. There were many topics that were discussed at this meeting. The first section of the meeting was reports about the food service and financial standing of the school district. The food service report states that they have distributed 20,000 more breakfast meals than this time last year, yet they have†¦show more content†¦It was approved and the meeting came to an end (February Meeting Minutes, 2017). I did not attend the following meeting in March, and the minutes from the meeting have not been uploaded on Lamar School District Re-2 website. The reason that I chose this body of government is because it directly is involved with my education. Every decision that is made whether it be from budge spending to curriculum changes, it will somehow affect me. I know that I am a senior and many of their choices that will be made the rest of this year will not affect me anymore. However, by going and seeing how the meeting are conducted and how the choices are made, I can better understand why they make the decisions they make. New policies and decisions will not affect me, but I do have a younger brother who still has two more years of high school. I want him to know that the choices made by those few people on the school board, have a profound effect on hundreds of children attending the schools in the district and should pay attention the decisions being made. From some of the discussions they have had since the meeting will really affect him and I feel like going and being an active member would help him understand why the dec isions are being made. This was a good form of government to take part in because it models in a smaller setting what the United States government does. Shah Jahan - Mughal Emperor of India

From the often chaotic and fratricidal court of Indias Mughal Empire sprang perhaps the worlds most beautiful and serene monument to love - the Taj Mahal.  Its designer was the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan himself, a complex man whose life ended in tragic circumstances. Early Life The child who would become Shah Jahan was born on March 4, 1592, in Lahore, now in Pakistan. His parents were Prince Jahangir and his wife Manmati, a Rajput princess who was called Bilquis Makani in the Mughal court. The baby was Jahangirs third son. He was named Ala Azad Abul Muzaffar Shahab ud-Din Muhammad Khurram, or Khurram for short. As a child, Khurram was a particular favorite of his grandfather, Emperor Akbar the Great, who personally oversaw the little princes education. Khurram studied warfare, the Koran, poetry, music, and other subjects suitable for a Mughal prince. In 1605, the 13-year-old prince refused to leave his grandfathers side as Akbar lay dying, despite the potential threat from his fathers rivals for the throne. Jahangir succeeded to the throne, after crushing an uprising led by one of his other sons, Khurrams half-brother. The incident brought Jahangir and Khurram closer; in 1607, the emperor awarded his third son the fiefdom of Hissar-Feroza, which court observers took to mean that 15-year-old Khurram was now the heir apparent. Also in 1607, Prince Khurram was engaged to marry Arjumand Banu Begum, the 14-year-old daughter of a Persian nobleman. Their wedding did not take place until five years later, and Khurram would marry two other women in the meantime, but Arjumand was his true love. She later became known as Mumtaz Mahal - The Chosen One of the Palace. Khurram dutifully sired a son by each of his other wives, and then neglected them almost entirely. He and Mumtaz Mahal had 14 children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. When descendants of the Lodi Empire rose up on the Deccan Plateau in 1617, Emperor Jahangir sent Prince Khurram to deal with the problem. The prince soon put down the rebellion, so his father granted him the name Shah Jahan, meaning Glory of the World. Their close relationship broke down, however, over court intrigues by Jahangirs Afghan wife, Nur Jahan, who wanted Shah Jahans youngest brother to be Jahangirs heir.   In 1622, with relations at their zenith, Shah Jahan went to war against his father. Jahangirs army defeated Shah Jahans after a four-year fight; the prince surrendered unconditionally. When Jahangir died just one year later, in 1627, Shah Jahan became the Emperor of Mughal India. Emperor Shah Jahan As soon as he took the throne, Shah Jahan ordered his stepmother Nur Jahan imprisoned and his half-brothers executed, in order to secure his seat. Shah Jahan faced challenges and uprisings all around the edges of his empire, as well. He proved equal to the challenges from Sikhs and Rajputs in the north and west, and from the Portuguese in Bengal. However, the death of his beloved Mumtaz Mahal in 1631 nearly shattered the emperor. Mumtaz died at the age of thirty-eight after giving birth to her 14th child, a girl named Gauhara Begum. At the time of her death, Mumtaz was in the Deccan with Shah Jahan on a military campaign, despite her condition. The distraught emperor reportedly went into seclusion for an entire year  and was only coaxed out of mourning by his and Mumtazs eldest daughter, Jahanara Begum. Legend says that when he emerged, the forty-year-old emperors hair had turned white. He was determined to build his empress the most magnificent tomb the world had ever known. It took the next twenty years of his reign, but Shah Jahan planned, designed, and oversaw the construction of the Taj Mahal, the worlds most famous and beautiful mausoleum. Made of white marble inlaid with Jasper and agates, the Taj is decorated with Koranic verses in lovely calligraphy. The building occupied 20,000 workers over the course of two decades, including craftsmen from far-off Baghdad and Bukhara, and cost 32 million rupees. In the meantime, Shah Jahan began to rely increasingly on his son Aurangzeb, who proved an effective military leader and an Islamic fundamentalist from a young age. In 1636, Shah Jahan appointed him viceroy of the troublesome Deccan; Aurangzeb was just 18. Two years later, Shah Jahan and his sons took the city of Kandahar, now in Afghanistan, from the Safavid Empire. This sparked on-going strife with the Persians, who recaptured the city in 1649. Shah Jahan fell ill in 1658  and appointed his and Mumtaz Mahals eldest son Dara Shikoh as his regent. Daras three younger brothers immediately rose up against him and marched on the capital at Agra.  Aurangzeb defeated Dara and his other brothers  and took the throne. Shah Jahan then recovered from his illness, but Aurangzeb declared him unfit to rule and had him locked up in the Agra Fort for the rest of his life. Shah Jahan spent his last eight years gazing out the window at the Taj Mahal, attended by his daughter Jahanara Begum. On January 22, 1666, Shah Jahan died at the age of 74. He was interred in the Taj Mahal, beside his beloved Mumtaz Mahal.

Merits and Demerits of Dictatorship free essay sample

Stability of government the government will stay the same. In times of political warfare and inner party turmoil and war this may become a relief to finally have a stable government, 2. The dictator may be a Benevolent Dictator meaning that the dictator actually acts out in the best interests of the people. Advantages of Dictatorship Government Dictatorship can be defined as a form of government in which the power is centralized. It either lies with a single person or a small group of people. The general population has no say in the functioning of the government. The people do not have any choice with regards to by whom or how their country will be run. In a dictatorship form of government, the people are expected to do, whatever is decided for them by the dictator. China, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Cuba, among many others, follow dictatorship form of government. Now that we know what is dictatorship, let us try to understand what are the advantages of dictatorship. We will write a custom essay sample on Merits and Demerits of Dictatorship or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Stable Government As in a dictatorship, the decision making lies with only one person and others do not have any say in the working of the government, it offers a kind of stability to the country. Problems such as frequent elections, as in the case of democracy, or a disruption of peace due to political factions, do not arise in a dictatorship. Less Room for Corruption Another of the dictatorship advantages is that a dictator is very stringent with regards to the rules, regulations, penalties, punishments and rewards. This makes the people working under him less liable to corruption. Most Efficient During Emergencies When a country faces any kind of emergency situation such as a war or a health epidemic, a dictatorship government can prove to be the most efficient one. The reason being that all the decisions are taken by one person, so there is no ambiguity with regards to the plan of action as well as individual responsibilities that are fixed to cope with the emergency situation. So, one of the main advantages of dictatorship over democracy is that it is better equipped to face emergencies. Lesser Crime Rate Most of the dictatorship governments are police states. So, in a way there is low crime rate under such regimes. Another reason for a better law and order situation in these states is that various laws are passed immediately, without any discussion or waiting for the public opinion on them. This leads to better control over crimes too. Things Happen Quickly In a dictatorship form of government, all things, whether related to governance or businesses or anything else, happen much quicker than in other types of government. The reason for this is the same i. e. decision making lies with a single person. These are some of the advantages of dictatorship. Although, for these advantages to translate into real life, a dictator needs to be self less, benevolent, well experienced and intelligent. As a dictator has unlimited power, if he does not possess these qualities, the disadvantages of dictatorship, such as oppression of people, no freedom of choice for the people, accumulation of wealth in a few hands, loss of civil rights, flawed decision making, etc. an lead the country toward a wrong path. Looking at the stakes associated with a dictatorship form of government, many countries under such a regime are considering becoming democracies, which is a form of government for the people, of the people and by the people. Today, looking at the progress democracies such as America and India are making, democracy is considered the best form of governance.

Fear of My First Speech in Class free essay sample

Fear of My First Speech in Class When I thought of my first speech class, I was a bit frantic. After reading about professional public speakers stories on fear of public speaking and how they essentially overcame it, I told myself you can do it. The day of presenting my speech finally arrived and I volunteered to be the one to go first in class. I was more apprehensive about my accent than anything else. Would the audience understand me clearly? Would they be bored with what I have to say about my chosen topic? Would I captive them and would I make a good impression? Well, I gave the speech without a hitch. It was helpful to have my outline I created for the perusal of the class. My speech flowed particularly well thanks to the step-by-step key points of the outline. Meanwhile, I dared to glance from time to time at the audience to see if I could pick up cues. We will write a custom essay sample on Fear of My First Speech in Class or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Sometime I found myself elevating my pitch, smiling just to capture my audience, and to gain confidence that my topic was an important and resourceful topic. To conclude, after I was done with my speech the class in a jovial expression clapped and smiled. My heart was palpitating so hard I thought I would faint. I had more fear as I was closing my speech. This fear was primarily due to what the critique of my audience would be. The response from the â€Å"the love notes† includes positive sayings and great feedback from each classmate, including the professor. As for my second speech in class, I could say I did not do as well as the first one. You would think that I would get it now and do better. Yet, I didn’t think I delivered as well as I did with the first one. Although the audience was listening to me, it seemed to be redundant and very similar to the first speech, but with fewer interesting details. After listen to some of the students’ speech I realized many of the pointers that I left out on my own speech. By listen and examine others mistakes it can be beneficial for one own mistake. I have learned a great deal from Communication 111. I would apply all the concepts to my future endeavors. References Lucas, Stephen E. (2009). The art of public speaking (10th ed. ). I remember her last time; I was in Australia at that time doing my MBA (Finance) from University of Perth. I went there on a scholarship, my grandmother was suffering from Lung cancer, she was a smoker, and I had my flight from Perth at 10:00 p.m. in the night. I was on my way to see her, the flight got delayed over and over and we finally took off at 4:00 am. And reached my hometown after 28 long hours. I was fully exhausted. I decided not to visit immediately, I spent a night at a hotel. And decided I will visit her after taking some rest. I called her and said I am stuck somewhere and will be there as soon as possible. I found a hotel, and checked in. The moment I saw my room, I tipped the Servant, and told him to put a â€Å"Do not Disturbâ € Sign on my door Knob. I saw the bed and without taking off my Suit, neck tie or even my shoes, I fell on the Bed and fell into asleep that lasted almost 16 hours. The moment I woke up, I took a look at my cell phone and saw 18 miscalls, two from my college room mates and the remaining from my Grand Mother’s House. I immediately called my Friends and told him that by the grace of God, I have reached the destination. Then I called my grandmother and told her I’ll be at her house in 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours. She said fine but her tone got me worried. Because I could sense that she was very angry at me for not showing up when the plane landed. I got to the Bathroom, took a bath, ordered some lunch, put on some clothes and shoes, and waited for the hotel boy to bring me my lunch. When the guy got me my lunch, I ate it in a jiffy. Communication within groups Essay -- essays research papers

There are many different kinds of groups that exist between college students that deal with communication they range from sports teams to many community or social groups. The type of organizations that are mostly found in many colleges today are Greek letter organizations. In this paper I will exploring communication within the realm of sororities. First, I am going to start with the history of Sororities, then I am going to write about how important it communication is during what sororities call the pledge process. Furthermore I am going to tell about the different things that sororities have, such as the symbols, colors and different things that may deal with communication. Even though all sororities have different representations for their symbols and colors, they all have them and they mean certain things. Before sororities came about they only had fraternities which dated back the colonial times then later in the mid 19th century so rorities came about due to the decrease in popularity (Encarta). During that period, colleges focused almost exclusively on teaching the classics (Greek and Latin literature) and promoting religious piety, rather than liberal arts (science, history, and literature) or applications of learning such as engineering and agriculture. In response, students created their own outlets to debate the intellectual and political ideas of their time. The early debating societies took on names that reflected classical thinkers or ideas( Encarta). Until the 20th century, most fraternities and sororities excluded African American students. The movement to create organizations for African American students began in 1906 with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Cornell University. Two years later, the first sorority for African American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha, was established at Howard University. Members of African American Greek-letter organizations sought to help other black students develop to the... ...e so they have what we have to say. Back then it was a way of saying their pain so they wouldn’t get in trouble. They couldn’t’ say anything negative so it was a kind of a code that they had used( www.dailybruin.ucla.edu).† In conclusion sororities like other groups have communication which is important for them to survive. Throught communication sororities are able to continue the legacy and reaffirm the goals set forth by their founders, as well as help the organization to grow. In this paper I have talked about sororities history of how they started and also the things that they do as forms of communication in order to survive in the group. Description of my visit to cemetery

The cemetery visit causes eerie feelings of stillness and uneasiness. 1. It is very quiet, serene, peaceful and absolutely still, except for birds chirping all around me. 2. I made sure that I visited during the daylight hours when the sun was indeed shining brightly: displaying brilliant beauty and dispelling any shadows as I walked on tiptoes it seems. -I am very afraid to visit the gravesite after sunset hours. I do not like dark shadows or anything that is mysterious or makes me feel queasy and uneasy. -The gravesites all around are flat for the most part, with a few mounds of earth and head stones. -The entire place is not even called a cemetery or gravesite, but it is known as a memorial garden. It does seem far more pleasant to me to visit and explore a memorial garden instead of a cemetery. When I hear the word garden connected to anything I think of doing fun things, of flowers, the green blossoms and the springtime buds and joyful memories. I think of vegetables and fruits growing on a plot of ground. I think of well-manicured lawns carpeted by rich, healthy green grass. I think of produce I can harvest from the earth, wash off and eat right away. 4.  Ã‚   My cemetery visit is pleasant and exciting simply because of the weather and the environment I encounter at the site and it is daytime and the light everywhere is very bright. The grounds are also immaculate and blossoming. The whole of nature seems to be at peace everywhere. 5.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Most gravesites have names on them with very pretty collections of flowers and floral arrangements atop the ground. I cannot help but notice the green grass is flourishing well — healthy well-fed and quite inviting. A few other visitors stroll through the garden thoughtfully, mincing and watching their every step, apparently out of respect for the dead buried there. 6.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I also notice a few crystal white gazebos scattered throughout the garden where visitors can sit in order to reflect and meditate. Indeed flowers and perennials surround their white lattice work of wood with intricate and striking designs. Everything seems to have been made to encourage reverence and awe. 7.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Even though very beautiful and still and quiet, the gravesite environment causes me inevitably to think of my life, to think about death itself — what it is and why it is. I really wonder where all of those people went whose remains are buried beneath the cemetery dirt. 8.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The entire scene also makes me think of my own mortality. How very fragile and transient human beings really are. â€Å"Here today and gone tomorrow† is a commonly spoken folk phrase that reminds me of how we must really take care of ourselves and live our lives as long and as rich as we can. The gravesite makes me think of the beauties of life that I possess now. Its joys and its many opportunities are incomparable. I certainly do not plan or wish to die now. I want to live as long as I can. 9.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The cemetery visit also forces me to think of my own passage into the other realm, into oblivion. What shall it be like it? I really wonder and have wondered for some time, now. What is

Poetic Analysis of Psalm 19 - 1074 Words

Pslam 19 is a hymn with a focus on God’s creation and His revelation to the world through scripture. Through this psalm we are able to see how God has chosen to reveal Himself to the world. He chose to reveal Himself through creation and through His Scriptures. This Psalm also defines characteristics of God through how He describes His Word and Creation. The psalm scientifically provides insight as it describes the heavens and the action of the sun. As insightful as the psalm is, it’s important to recognize the poetry that lies on the pages. â€Å"Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.† (Psalm 19:5 NASB) The simile used in the verse paints a great picture for the sun and how it†¦show more content†¦You have to first understand that the law has authority to trust that it can restore you. This is a great depiction of progressing in meaning. â€Å"Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.† (19:3 NASB) This anthropomorphism gives human form to the non-human form of day and night. The human characteristic of pouring forth speech and revealing knowledge tells about what God has created. God has created something so amazing that it reveals part of who He is. Even though God has humans to carry out his message, and to reveal knowledge through this verse we know that it is not the only way God revealed Himself. The overall structure of the Psalm is that it is broken into two halves. The first half of the psalm is God’s creation. The second half deals with God’s Word. Though they are both different they both share the common theme of god revealing Himself to mankind. Inside of these halves the author uses different parallelism. In the first verse we see synonymous parallelism, using the heavens and skies to make the point that they are telling of God’s Work. In the seventh verse we see synthetic parallelism showing the progression from perfection to restoration of the imperfect. This psalm is a difficult psalm to break down due to differences in structure but also in it’s nature.
